I’m Bariaa Khalil, 5th year PhD student in the Molecular Medicine and Translational Research Program at University of Sharjah. In 2008, I got my bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology from the American University of Beirut. Then, I worked for one year as a clinical research assistant on a study investigating the genes underlying cardiac diseases. In 2012, I finished my master’s degree in biology during which I investigated the preclinical efficacy of the synthetic retinoid ST1926 for treating adult T-cell leukemia. After that, I moved to Saudi Arabia and worked as a research assistant in King Faisal Specialized Hospital and Research Center. During my stay in Saudi Arabia, I finished my second master’s degree in international management specializing in healthcare administration at the University of Liverpool. In 2014, I moved to Dubai and worked for 5 years in the medical insurance domain where I started as a senior medical insurance specialist and got promoted after two years to manage the medical insurance team. However, my passion for research made me leave the insurance industry and go pursue my PhD in molecular medicine and translational research as a starting point to work on a medical challenge.
